I don't like or read romances or books of any popular genre. But romances... oh gag me. I haven't read one since I was fourteen years old and finished Barbarian Priestess behind the locked door of my parents' bathroom. Still, at the urging of a friend, I picked up this book, absolutely certain that I would put it down and be done with it ten minutes later. But there is something about Emma Scott's writing that kept me reading.I found myself falling into this tale against my own will, feeling as if I was the one falling in love. And that feeling stayed with me, coaxing me to pick the book up again and again. Soon, the taut suspense at the heart of the plot had me riveted.
Cooking while engrossed in a page-turner is a dangerous undertaking. By the time I finished the last words of the epilogue, I had the burns to prove it.
Emma Scott's deft writing and remarkable ability to create whole, multidimensional characters sucked me in and held me under until I reached the end. Even the antagonist of the story is complex enough that I cared about him while cringing at his actions.
Ms. Scott manages to conjure a world of emotions that linger because they ring true. It takes a great deal of art to make that happen.
I would recommend this book to just about anyone, particularly if they are mature enough to enjoy the deliciously rendered sex scenes. :)

Love Beyond Words City Lights San Francisco Book 1 edition by Emma Scott Romance eBooks Reviews
4.5 stars. It's not too often that I come across a book where both of the leading characters are introverted, and I loved that about Love Beyond Words, because their dynamic is so different than when there is at least 1 extrovert of the couple. Natalie works at a coffee shop as she studies for her accounting degree and happens to meet Julian, who is a customer, one day. Although there's an initial attraction, it's a very slow development between them towards friendship because Natalie is hesitant to perceive that there could be more, especially since Julian often sits in a corner and writes in his composition books, very concentrated on his task. However, Natalie has not escaped Julian's notice.
Natalie has dealt with grief and loss in the past so she is very hesitant to get too attached to anyone for fear of a repeat experience. As much as she loves her friends Marshall and Liberty, she keeps them at arm's length. She focuses her passion in reading and books. Although she is methodical, she has a side of her that is very vibrant and even poetic under the right circumstances.
As Natalie and Julian tentatively get to know each other through conversation, Julian sees how beautiful of a person Natalie is, except he has a secret that could potentially change the dynamic of everything. It's pretty easy to guess what his secret is based on his body language and overall behavior, especially during certain topics that they discuss. There is another element to the plot that could potentially derail their relationship and even put them in danger. I definitely admired Natalie's strength because initially, she comes off so very shy and withdrawn but when push comes to shove, she chooses in favor of protecting the people she cares the most about, but she also won't back away and fights hard. I also really liked Julian, too, because for all of his generosity and tenderness, he refuses to give up on what is most valuable to him and that stubbornness serves him well. Natalie and Julian are very different and flourish in each other's company compared to being with their friends and it's this reminder that keeps them bound to one another when doubts begin to settle in and threaten their happiness. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more by this author.
I read this book on a short flight to Seattle, and then again each night before falling asleep. I quickly became addicted to Ms. Scott's lovely words. For example "Her nerves hummed like the electrical lines that harnessed the buses from above and kept them tethered to their routes" and "A gold micro mosaic pendant lay against the black velvet. A willow tree in pale jade swayed over a lapis lakeshore."
Natalie, our heroine, becomes your friend. She's fully fleshed out tragic background, secluded and self-protective she finds a niche for herself at a wonderful Greek restaurant where she's adored by the owners. Natalie's love of books is palpable. Even though I knew this book was fiction, I wanted to find the author of her favorite books on and buy every title!
Love actually walks in the door and like many worthwhile things, we wait for it to manifest. Ms. Scott's paces it perfectly given the history of both characters. While we wait, we get to follow Natalie around San Francisco and its many gems, including the famed Saison.
It took me a little longer to warm up to Julian Kovac, the potential love interest. He is cool, mysterious and ever so handsome. Fortunately, there are also hints of passion to come. Ms. Scott does a great job of developing danger and a scary rival. This books is far from a sugar-coated romance and I would advise the faint of heart to beware the last quarter of the book. I, however, loved it!
Well done, Emma Scott. Encore! Encore!
