This is an interesting collection of stories. I gave it a try because I like writing that keeps me guessing, and these stories definitely do that. Some of them go on and on with the mystery and I still didn't understand why something was happening by the end of the story. Some of them seem do end abruptly, and I was left wondering why the person was doing, or not doing, something. My favorite stories in the book were "Diving Belles", "Of Mothers and Little People", and "Notes from the House Spirits". I admit, I didn't like all of them, or read all of them to the end once I'd started them. In addition to the enjoyably strange stories, the compelling connection of words the author uses are some of the best I've ever read. I would often read a phrase or sentence, and then have to stop and reread those again because they were so unusual and needed to be thought about and savored.Tags : ,Lucy Wood,Diving Belles,Bloomsbury UK,1408816857
Diving Belles Lucy Wood 9781408816851 Books Reviews
Perhaps before I go any further, I should explain that I only tend to rate and review books I've really enjoyed. Being negative is a drag and I value the positive in life - hence my mostly positive reviews.(Besides, all that stuff about 'words can never hurt me' is absolute rubbish!)
So, with that made clear, on to 'Diving Belles'.
The rather lovely people, from Mr B's Reading Emporium in Bath UK, chose this one for me - and what a choice it was.
Perhaps they chose it because, like the author, I live in Cornwall. But whatever their reason I can't thank them enough for introducing me to Lucy Wood's work.
I don't usually gravitate towards anthologies of short stories, but this book is a jewel. Not every story was to my taste but many were quite beautiful - and the writing is sublime. It lives way beyond the page. And each story is so different! I loved the tenderness in 'Beachcombing' and the wistfulness in 'Wisht'.
In fact, if I'm honest, I finished it with a wistful sigh; wishing that my writing could be as beautiful as Lucy Wood's words.
But it isn't.
Such is life.
