This book was well written. It covers the parent and nanny relationship beautifully. I have been a nanny for 20 years. I can't tell you how often I have worked for families that demand a unrealistic expectations but simply want to pay the nanny what a local childcare center costs. I wish more parents and nannies would read this book. It fairly covers both view points. It's definitely a must read for both first time parents and nannies.Tags : Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer: A Practical Guide for Finding and Achieving the Gold Standard of Care for Your Child [Tammy Gold] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.
The New Childcare Bible-- A Must-Have Whether You Have Occasional Sitters or a Full-Time Nanny Finding the right caregiver can be one of the most life-changing decisions a parent makes. Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer A Practical Guide for Finding and Achieving the Gold Standard of Care for Your Child Tammy Gold 9780399169885 Books Reviews
I just ordered this book by Tammy Gold and have found it really helpful and informative. The book is very clearly written and easy to follow and I have recommended it to several friends who have new babies and are looking for nannies. Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer is a good resource if you are looking for a part-time, full-time or live-in nanny. I found part 3 particularly helpful because I already have help and this was a great section about communicating with your nanny and providing consistent card for your children. I highly recommend this book!
This book came out just as my husband and I were beginning our nanny search for our new baby. Nothing else like Tammy Gold's advice exists. It's a wonderfully practical "how-to" guide on how to define your family's needs, interview, and hire a nanny. We used it like a bible to help us through the process. The last part of the book is especially helpful for us as new employers, learning how to train, interact with, and manage our nanny. I also appreciate the author's encouragement when it comes to the hiring process, as it was a bit daunting for us. So far our nanny is working out great, and I credit this book for helping us to find the best candidate.
We are also using the forms offered on Tammy Gold's website (like the emergency contact forms, daily communication log, etc.) for our "Nanny book." I can't recommend this book enough!
I'm a working professional, wife, and mother of a toddler, with another baby on the way. For reasons I find hard to articulate, the whole experience of finding the right nanny for my beautiful energetic little boy has been fraught with anxiety, misery and even embarrassment. My husband doesn't really get it - but it triggers all of my feelings of maternal guilt, anxiety and inadequacy. What's more frustrating is that despite my professional accomplishments and confidence in the workplace, it's been excruciating for me to ask for what I want from a nanny, deliver feedback, and communicate clearly. This book has helped me get to the core of these issues. Reading it has been like having a reassuring friend to guide me through my nanny search process. It is a practical how-to guide, but it also addresses all of the myriad feelings you would never expect to come up in a relationship with your nanny. I wish I had bought this book BEFORE I hired my first nanny - it would have saved me a lot of angst.
This book was recommended to me by the author when I posted on social media about how clueless and overwhelmed I felt with the nanny interviewing process. She breaks down all of the different pieces involved in finding the perfect nanny including how to train them when you do find the right one. Highly recommend!
As a full time working mom who travels a lot, I am totally dependent on my nanny care and I know how easy it is to make a bad hire (e.g. the one who left my baby in the car while she went in to pick up my toddler from school). Luckily, I now have a amazing nanny and I bought this book to make sure he's happy in her job and because I'd like to ask her to help me with some of the housework and I wanted to find out what is reasonable to ask of a nanny. I found this book super practical and easy to read with lots of helpful 'cut and paste' tools - e.g. nanny responsibility lists/daily schedules (I've adapted this for my children), sample job listing ads and contracts etc. Although I didn't buy the book to find a nanny, there is a huge up front section that outlines the different types/styles of nannies so you can find a nanny that matches your needs/parenting style (mine apparently is a Parental Unit Nanny). I also found the Interview screening section, nanny 'Trialling' (wish I'd thought of that) and Training very helpful and much more thorough than what I've seen out there. There's also a lot of helpful info throughout the book on understanding how your nanny thinks about her job and how to create an honest and open dialogue with your nanny. This is spot on as most working women I know (myself included) are able to be tough negotiators at work and empathetic colleagues, but at home have trouble being direct and honest with our nannies. Ms Gold's recommendations are realistic and helpful -e.g. acknowledging people fib and make mistakes, that nannying and parenting are harder than we like to admit to and we need to set realistic expectations (e.g. what's important and what isn't). So overall, super helpful - I'll be using a lot of these tools and I will be lending it to my friend whose nanny quit on her last week without notice (which - reading this book - I suspect had more to do with her nanny management than the quality of her nanny;)
There is no other book like this one and it is a great read, ALL parents should purchase! For $12 dollars and in a few hours I learned so much about parenting and caregivers!! It is a quick, easy read and really helped me understand how to finally find good a good babysitter and why it is so important. The book makes the process so simple and walks you through the entire process by saying "during interviews ask that and say this" there are sample questions in every chapters and ways to solve problems. The first half of the book is why the right caregiver is so important and then how to find one, the second half tells you how to communicate clearly so that the caregivers know how to best handle you and your children. I also learned a lot of parenting information too in Chapter 3 there is a whole chart on what a child needs developmentally from parents and caregivers and it really helped me understand what to do better as a mom. I really recommend it!
