Being detained and questioned wasn’t what Francesca expected when she arrived in America. Sure the passport she was using was a fake, along with the others hidden away in her luggage; but that was normal. It’s how she was raised, how her father had kept her safe. Except for now. When she learns that she matches the description of a girl that went missing twelve years ago she is forced to be reunited with the family that claims she is their Fiona. But it isn’t until she meets a man that was so broken by the loss of that little girl that she desperately wants to be Fiona. The only problem is that Francesca doesn’t quite know who she really is.I put this one off for a really long time. Not sure why. It could be that young adult is a genre that I find works bests when I pace myself. The sweet needs to be inserted in between the filthy dirty stuff so that I can appreciate it more. And although this was a very sweet read that was filled with sugary moments rather than steamy ones, it had that trademark JA Huss twistiness to it. It didn’t take long to get lost in this story and to start coming up with my own ideas as to how Francesca and Fiona’s lives were entwined.
And Brody. Swoon. Bad-boy that was so broken over the loss of a little girl that and then by his parent’s death. He was perfect. This was a mix between a little bit of suspense and romance and JA did an amazing job creating characters that you instantly loved.
This book just proves that JA can write pretty much anything. I love her darker reads where the bad-boy can take a life in one breath and then whisper words of love in another. That stark difference in her heroes is much different than the boy she gives you with Brody, but all that sweet you love in her dark heroes; well that is Brody.
If you are looking for an enjoyable young adult romance that packs a little more punch with the story this is a great one to pick up. There is no sex, so don’t expect any sexy-time; but this book gives you the butterflies of a new love that is packaged in the longing of a lost soul mate.

Francesca's come to the USA 🇺🇸 a few months before she starts college in San Diego. Francesca is stopped at LAX when entering the country because she looks like a computer rendition of a girl, Fiona Sullivan, that was kidnapped 12 years ago. When the authorities decided she is Fiona, she is forced to live with the people she was apparently kidnapped from. She eventually starts to settle in with the American family. She likes her new siblings since she has only ever been an only child. She falls for Brody, the bad boy next door, that has always been obsessed with Fiona and her disappearance. He knew from a young age that she is his soulmate. When she disappeared he was crushed and never really recovered from it.
Great. Entertaining. Unique in that it did not follow the typical YA storyline formula. It would be great if Julie could focus some of her great imagination into another YA novel. I get tired of reading books that are 25% sex scenes. Don't get me wrong, she is brilliant, I just need breaks from the typical sex formula. Plus, I can share this book with my nieces.
4.5 Stars
Losing Francesca is about a 18 year old girl who comes to America to attend college only for the FBI to say that her passport is fake and take her in for questioning and then jail. Only for facial recognition to say that she is Fiona Sullivan the girl who went missing 12 years ago on a trip to Italy.
She goes to the Sullivan house and has to live with them for several weeks until Fiona turns 18 then she can do what she wants. While she's there she meets Frank- the father, Sean- the older brother who desperately misses his younger sister and Brody- the bad boy neighbor that the whole family kind of hates.
Francesca is confused and angry that the FBI has brought her there and says that she's someone she's not. Francesca knows that her real father is coming soon and he is not to be messed with.
But by staying there she develops relationships and really wants to be the Fiona that they claim her to be, even though she looks exactly like her. Does Francesca want to stay with her real father and keep her secrets or live with the Sullivan family as Fiona?
This I believe is J.A.'s only YA novel with a smidge of NA.
Losing Francesca only spans like a week and is fast paced but not too fast paced where you feel like it's going too fast. Francesca not wanting to be there and hiding secrets of her own that she cannot tell because she and her father will be in danger.
We get two POVS, Francesca and Brody so we understand there though process and how they feel about each other and the situation. I rather enjoyed all the characters and the side characters.
All the adopted children and Brody's family situation with his two younger brothers and his older brother. Losing Francesca is really much about a sense of family and togetherness, the loss of a family and what to do when you have two different families and how to choose between them two.
I was trying to figure out if Francesca was really Fiona and what happened to her. Why doesn't she remember her life before and if she really even is her.
If you loved J.A.'s previous novels give this one a try. But to warn you, this isn't very steamy or sexy and dark as her other novels. It's still a good read.
